New vehicle sales in Thailand continue to plummet in August, with total industry volumes dropping by 31% year on year to 68,805 units, according to the Federation of Thai Industries.

The country’s economy is struggling to recover from the recent political turmoil which culminated in a military coup in May. An FTI spokesman said slow disbursement of budgets by the military government and weak farm prices were holding back the recovery.

Cumulative eight month sales fell by close to 38% to 579,243 vehicles while exports increased by just 1.7% to 742,382 units.

Production in this period fell 28% to 1.25m units.
