He said "strategies are being put in place by all government departments to make Thailand an electric vehicle production base within five years".
Somkid added initiatives were currently being coordinated between various ministries, including industry, energy and transport, to make this plan happen including promoting domestic purchases of electric vehicles by government organisations and state enterprises.
The transport ministry also planned to introduce electric buses and electric motorcycle taxis while PTT and the Electricity Generating Authority would collaborate on rolling out recharging infrastructure across the country.
Industry minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has set a target for the country to produce up to 750,000 electric vehicles annually by 2030 with around 5,000 battery powered buses expected to be in circulation by 2025.
