New vehicle sales in Thailand fell 44.8% to 71,680 units in February, from peak volume of 129,910 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Federation of Thai Industries.

Political unrest in the country over the last several months has had a severe impact on consumer and business confidence. The expiry of first time buyer incentives over a year ago has also impacted demand for new vehicles in the country.

Cumulative sales in the first two months of 2014 were 45.2% lower at 140,188 units, compared with 255,727 units in the same period last year.

Vehicle production fell 24.3% to 173,506 units in February and 27.7% to 336,158 units year to date.

Exports were 19.9% higher at 97,200 units in February, but were 1.7% lower year to date at 178,225 units.
