Thailand exported 43,377 cars and trucks in May, up 18% from the same month of 2005 but down from 35,955 in April, Toyota Motor Corp’s Thai unit told Reuters on Friday.

The report said May exports raised to 218,051 the number of vehicles exported by Thailand in the first five months of this year, an increase of 41.6% from the same period of 2005. Thailand exported 440,640 cars and trucks in 2005, up 32.7% from 332,000 in 2004, the Japanese carmaker said.
Reuters noted that Toyota, which compiles Thai statistics for the whole auto industry, has said it expects Thai auto exports to rise to 520,000 in 2006.
Toyota exported 14,907 Thai-built vehicles in May, followed by Mitsubishi with 9,663, Honda with 7,852, Ford with 4,091, Isuzu with 3,160, Mazda with 1,971, General Motors with 1,661, and Nissan with 72.
Reuters noted that Thailand has become a major export base for small pick-up trucks for most Japanese and US car makers. One-tonne Thai-made trucks are exported to about 180 countries.
