Toyota’s
all-new Corolla Altis, unveiled at a motor show in Bangkok recently, is the latest
version of the world’s top-selling car for sale in Asian markets outside Japan.

To be assembled in Thailand and other countries throughout the region, the
Altis has different styling to the model sold in Japan and a longer wheelbase
than its predecessor.

The car will be offered with 1.6 and 1.8-litre petrol engines and Toyota’s
infinitely variable valve timing (VVT-i) technology will be available on top
models.

Other new features for the Asian Corolla include vehicle stability control,
electronic brake force distribution and brake assist.

The optional automatic gearbox has a Mercedes-style gated shift lever and the
‘Optitron’ instrument cluster gives the driver a choice of three different
coloured displays.

Prices are expected to be in the $US15,000-19,000 range in Thailand where the
Corolla Altis will be launched in the second quarter to rival Honda’s new
Civic and the latest Nissan Sunny. Mitsubishi’s new Lancer is due out in
the fourth quarter.
