The board said this week that Toyota will invest nearly $US1 billion over the next two years to transfer the facility. It also mentioned the creation of 3,000 jobs for Thais.

Toyota first announced the project last year, when it said it planned the Thai facility to be its largest pickup truck production and export base in Asia, outside of Japan.

Toyota already has two car plants in Thailand (its locally-built Corolla sedan is a mainstay of Bangkok’s taxi fleet) and wants to shift pickup truck production to Thailand to save labour costs and be closer to parts suppliers.

Thailand is already the production base for jointly developed and built Ford and Mazda pickups produced at the Auto Alliance plant while Isuzu has also announced plans to make the country its centre of pickup production.
