The Ranger is assembled in Thailand for markets other than the US alongside similar models badged as the Mazda B-series.

The US Ranger and B-series – completely different and much older models – are assembled at Ford’s Twin Cities Assembly plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, for the US market.

The first generation Thai Ranger/B-series was launched in 1999 and is exported as far afield as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

The latest model features a 2.5 litre common rail DOHC diesel engine, delivering 143PS, and a three-litre engine delivering 156PS.

The latest engines have high pressure Bosch fuel injection systems and variable geometry turbochargers.

The 2.5L engine develops 330Nm of torque at a low 1,800 rpm yet provides claimed 22% better fuel economy than the Ranger’s previous 2.5L turbo engine. The new three-litre engine produces claimed best-in-class 380Nm of torque, also at 1,800 rpm.

A dual mass flywheel is claimed to increase engine response and reduce vibration to provide smooth acceleration and responsiveness.

The turbo-diesels are mated to a new five-speed manual transmission.
