UK telecoms provider BT Group plans a two year study to convert or upgrade street cabinets for EV charging.

Street cabinets house copper wire broadband and phone service connections but will go out of service when the upgrade to full fibre optic cabling is complete.

The first pilot phase begins in Northern Ireland next autumn with access to the EV chargers limited to BT workers. Public access will follow as more locations are added across the UK from later in 2023.

Early projections suggest 60,000 of the 90,000 cabinets could be suitable for upgrading for EV charging.

Trials would not disrupt telecommunications services or new fibre infrastructure.
