Takata's chairman and CEO has publicly expressed his intention to resign in the wake of the company's faulty airbag scandal, according to a Nikkei report.

"I won't try to stick [to my position] for long," Shigehisa Takada, said at the company's general shareholders meeting in Tokyo. "Once I'm certain that the company will no longer go awry, I want to hand the job [to someone else]."

Takada is the first member of the founding family to take public responsibility for the existential crisis for the supplier, which is seeking buyers in order to avoid bankruptcy

The company's defective airbag inflators have prompted worldwide recalls. "I would like to apologise again for giving many people tremendous worries and trouble due to the inflator problem," Takada said in his opening statement, Nikkei reported.

Takata's airbag crisis began in 2008 and the recall of faulty airbags in the US market has reached almost 40m. The global position could go over 200m.
