New vehicle sales in Taiwan rose by 5.5% to 47,936 units in January compared with 45,430 sales in the same month of 2016, according to local reports citing company data.

This comes after the market hit a 12 year high of 444,669 units last year, driven by government scrappage incentives, buoyant consumer sentiment and aggressive marketing campaigns by the leading brands.

New models launched at the Taipei motor show in December also helped lift the market last month and this is expected to continue throughout the year.

Toyota and Lexus distributor Hotai Motor reported a 5.7% sales rise to 14,901 units in January, helped by strong demand for its Sienta compact MPV.

Mitsubishi distributor China Motor Corporation enjoyed an almost 20% jump in sales to 5,635 units in January, while Yulon Nissan – which is also responsible for the local Luxgen brand – saw its sales plunge by 27% to 4,227 units.

Honda Taiwan's sales gained over 15% to 3,964 units after a strong performance last year while Mercedes-Benz sales rose by 7.7% to 3,082 units. 

Total imports reached 16,250 units last month, equivalent to just over a third of total vehicle sales.
