Taiwan's new vehicle market expanded by almost 16% to 43,222 units in March 2021 from 37,279 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by the directorate of highways.

Compared with the previous month, which had fewer working days due to the Lunar New Year, sales were up by 58%.

Sales of imported vehicles were just slightly higher year-on-year at 19,806 units last month while sales of locally produced vehicles jumped by over 30% to 23,416 units helped by new models such as the Toyota Corolla Cross and Ford Focus and Kuga.

In the first three months of 2021, the overall market was up by just under 17% at 121,575 units from 104,046 units in the same period of last year, reflecting mainly strong economic growth. GDP was estimated to have expanded by over 6% in the first quarter after growth of 5.1% in the fourth quarter of last year, thanks to strong domestic consumption and exports.

Toyota first quarter sales increased by almost 18% to 35,487 units, followed by Nissan with 8,507 (+13.7%), Mercedes-Benz 8,360 (+18.1%), Ford 7,819 (+59.1%), Honda 7,312 (+20.7%) and China Motor 6,665 (+26.4%).
