Statistics compiled by Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) showed that in the first 20 days of June 12,933 new cars were licensed, a 24.0% year-on-year gain.
In the year-to-date (to the first 20 days of June) the overall market saw a 12.5% decline versus the same period last year.
Local media reports say that some automakers have upgraded their overall market forecast to about 250,000 units as new-car sales in the second half are expected to enjoy growth.
Industry sources say that June is a traditionally strong month for car sales in Taiwan and some carmakers may have held off from sales in recent months, preferring to record bumper sales in June. Nevertheless, the strength of the part-month gain belies recent gloomy economic news.
