New vehicle sales in Taiwan rose by 3.6% to 42,751 units in June, lifted by promotion campaigns and government subsidies, according to local industry sources.

Hotai Motor, the distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles, reported 14,409 sales in June to claim a 33.7% market share. Mitsubishi Motors distributor China Motor Corporation sold 4,434 units last month, followed by Nissan-Infiniti distributor Yulon Motor with 4,167 units.

Mercedes-Benz sold 2,612 vehicles in June, helped by the recent launch of the new E-class model.

There is an expectation in the market that prices could increase significantly in the coming months, however, due also to the recent sharp appreciation of the Japanese yen. This, inevitably, would adversely affect sales in the second half of the year.

In the first half of 2016, total vehicle sales rose by 2.3% year-on-year to 222,209 units. Hotai expects the overall market to reach 420,000 units in 2016 – largely unchanged on last year's 421,000 units.
