Nissan is retrospectively extending battery warranty from three to five years for about 10,000 European owners of the original, Japanese-built Leaf.

The warranty is now for battery capacity loss below nine bars (out of 12) for five years or 100,000km (60,000 miles).

Nissan claims 93% of European Leaf have said they are “very” or “completely” satisfied with the EV.

The automaker has just started deliveries of an updated UK-built Leaf with tweaks said to extend battery range.

Europe sales and marketing head Paul Willcox said: “Our analysis of available data shows that our battery technology, which is developed and manufactured by Nissan with our partner NEC, is durable and reliable in real world use here in Europe.

“We are taking the reassuring step of offering our first customers the same peace of mind on the warranty as the customers who buy the new, European manufactured Leaf.”
