The parties plan talks on a compromise between GM’s cost-cutting needs and the job security of 1,100 employees at GM’s Astra Combo van production facility in Portugal, which the automaker says costs EUR500 a unit too much.


General Motors Europe president Carl-Peter Forster said in a statement: “The start of constructive negotiations with our staff representatives symbolises an important step in the right direction and which will benefit both parties.


“We will now be able to develop perspectives for our employees without endangering the competitiveness of our company.”
