Volvo
is to spend 1.4 billion kronor ($US130 million) developing a new 16-litre diesel
engine for trucks, buses, construction equipment and marine and industrial uses,
the company said in a statement.

The development project is the first stage of an engine consolidation programme
following last year’s acquisition of Renault’s RVI truck division and its U.S.
subsidiary Mack Trucks.

“The acquisition of Renault VI and Mack provides us with the necessary volume
and base of expertise to develop a proprietary 16-litre diesel engine and manufacture
it in-house," chief executive Leif Johnson said.
