Saab, the Swedish unit of General Motors Corp. (GM), laid off 1,300 workers last year and another 100 in January in an effort to streamline its organization, Dow Jones added.

The layoffs include 25 administrators and 70 assembly line workers at the car factory in Trollhattan, 440 kilometres southwest of Stockholm, Saab spokesman Christer Nilsson said.

“This is a measure that comes from the fact that the new organization has been in place for six months,” he said. “We’ve been able to see that we have redundancies.”

Nilsson said the layoffs would reduce the number of workers at the factory to 6,000. Worldwide, the company employs 7,500.
