Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has issued a recall for 219,577 vehicles across the US, citing a defect with the rear-view camera system.

The recall encompasses 141,906 Ram ProMaster models from 2019 to 2021 and 77,671 Dodge Journey models from 2019 to 2020.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says there is a 100% chance of the defect being present in the affected vehicles.

The safety concern arises from a malfunctioning rear-view camera that may display a blank, black, blue, or inverted image, reducing the driver’s visibility behind the vehicle.

This issue could lead to an increased risk of a crash if the driver fails to notice the faulty screen and does not ensure safe reversing conditions.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) US has committed to addressing the issue by replacing the defective rear-view cameras free of charge.

Dealers will be notified of the recall on or about 3 September, with owner notifications to follow later in the month.

The auto regulator began investigating the loss of rear-view camera functionality in Dodge Journey models from 2018 to 2020 in February last year.

Following this, FCA US submitted a response in May 2024 and engaged in discussions with the NHTSA in February 2025, which revealed an uptick in related claims from July 2019.

Further investigations by FCA US’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) team, conducted between February and May 2025, involved reviewing the change history of related components and consulting with the supplier.

The TSRC organisation officially opened an investigation in May 2025, which led to the recognition of a vehicle build issue causing the loss of rear-view camera image, potentially violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111.

On 19 August 2025, FCA US concluded through its Vehicle Regulations Committee that all affected vehicles might not comply with FMVSS No. 571.111 S6.2.6.

This recall follows a previous action by Stellantis last year, which involved more than 300,000 Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks due to a faulty hydraulic control unit.

Additionally, Stellantis has recently outlined the significant impact of US tariffs on its business, projecting a reduction in earnings of approximately €1.5 billion for the current year, with most of the financial impact expected in the latter half.

The company is also adjusting its production strategies to mitigate the effects of these tariffs.
