Nacam, Bosch and ZF Lenkysteme’s 50/50 auto parts-making venture, will shut its loss-making Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona factory next April to move production to ZF facilities in Germany and France, a workers’ committee representative told just-auto on Monday.

The initiative will see 189 workers leave the company.

Workers’ rep Javier Medina said Nacam hopes to save costs with the move, which will see half of its staff leave this year and the other half when the factory closes.

At Sant Boi, Nacam makes transmission parts for car manufacturers including Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Seat and Citroen, Medina said.

Nacam officials could not be reached for comment.

According to Medina, Nacam could also lay off workers at its other production site in Santa Perpetua y La Moguda, which employs 60 people.

“That factory has been losing money for 16 years and last year they [Nacam] opened a new factory in China so its days are probably numbered,” he said.

Therefore, union officials are urging workers to accept Nacam’s layoff compensation instead of its offer to take up a job at Santa Perpetua.
