No decision has been taken on where in Europe the next generation Mokka will be built, a Vauxhall spokesman told just-auto. Citing unnamed sources, German newspaper Handelsblatt said earlier General Motors was considering moving production to Planta de Figueruelas, near Zaragoza in Spain.

The hot-selling small SUV is currently manufactured at GM Korea’s Bupyeong plant. In March, Opel strategy chief Thomas Sedran said the second generation model would be manufactured in Europe, not Korea.

Shifting the Mokka successor to Planta de Figueruelas (Zaragoza) would be a logical move, as the factory, GM Europe’s largest, seems certain to build the follow-up to today’s Corsa five-door. Eisenach in Germany should again manufacture the three-door car. The same basic set of modules is expected to be shared by the S4500 Corsa and the Mokka replacement.

An Opel spokesman told Reuters GM was looking for additional capacity to produce subcompact SUVs but declined to comment specifically on any plans to move the Mokka to Spain.

A Chevrolet spokesman told the news agency there were no current plans to move the Trax, the brand’s version of the Mokka, from Korea.

GM Korea also builds another variant called Encore for Buick in North America.
