To mark the special occasion, Nissan Motor Iberica SA invited Spanish king Juan Carlos I, Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn, employees and the press to see the first Spanish-built redesigned Navara pick-up model built at its Barcelona plant.
The Navara joins the recently launched Pathfinder SUV as one of two new vehicles to be manufactured at Zona Franca this year. This builds on the company’s Spanish heritage of four-wheel drive vehicle manufacturing for both the home and export markets.
Nissan Motor Ibérica plays a key role in the brand’s overall strategy, with its production centre for 4×4, pick-up, multi purpose, commercial and light industrial vehicles. Over the 25-year period, these operations have boosted production volumes in Spain from 17,000 in 1980 to a forecast 190,000 units this year.
Nissan Spain currently employs 6,812 people and encompasses a national sales company, three manufacturing plants, a diesel engine plant, technical centre, parts distribution sites and other locations. Spain produces Nissan’s Terrano, Primastar, Almera Tino, Pathfinder and Navara models, as well as van variants badged for Renault and Opel.
Two billion euros has been committed to Nissan’s presence in Spain.
In recent years, to accommodate the latest two new models, an investment of €400 million was made, creating a further 1,200 jobs by extending to a third shift to ensure a flexible and consistent production process.
