New car sales in Spain plunged 24.1% year on year in July after government subsidies ended and sales tax rose, a trade association said on Monday.

The first drop for 10 months was nonetheless half as steep as expected, AFP reported.
Automakers’ association Anfac last week forecast a 50% fall and has yet to explain the disparity.
Spaniards bought 82,167 new cars in July, down from 121,483 a month earlier and from 108,221 in July 2009, Anfac said.
June sales were up 25.6% year on year, boosted by cash-for-clunkers subsidies which ran out last month and strong sales ahead of a 2% sales tax increase that came into effect on 1 July.
