Ford is to axe 1,300 workers of 7,000 at its Almussafes plants in the Valencia region while General Motors will cut 600 at its Figueruelas plant near Zaragoza, both in Spain, a report by local news agency EFE, citing workers’ representatives, said. Seat is also cutting output but not jobs.

Spokesman for neither Ford nor General Motors were available for comment, but Reuters noted that GM had said in late August that it would reduce production at Figueruelas – GM Europe’s main Corsa plant – due to falling demand.
As just-auto reported yesterday, the Spanish market was 41% down in August and JD Power suggested a fall of up to 25% now looks plausible this year, with a further double-digit decline anticipated for 2009.
Separately, Volkswagen-controlled Seat said in a statement that it would cut production. According to Reuters, EFE reported that it would reduce output of its Altea and Leon models by 300 vehicles a day but that there would be no job losses.
Toyota, Land Rover and Bentley have recently announced similar cutbacks here in the UK, reducing output but keeping the production staff on.
