The Madrid-based group has also demanded that Spain liberalise the emissions-testing service so that the country’s 3,500 dealers can provide it and has reiterated calls for a new and more ambitious Prever used-car scrapping programme.

The petition was made ahead of Spain’s general election, which took place on 9 March, handing a second term to socialist prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Faconauto said the current sales tax is “useless,” acting as an impediment for new vehicle sales at a time when Spaniards are feeling the pinch from higher interest rates and the mortgage crisis. The group called for part of the car sales tax to be transferred to the fuel tax.

Faconauto’s proposals were mirrored by other dealer and automobile federations which have been calling on the new government to act to help boost the sector’s fortunes in what is set to be a difficult year amid mixed sales forecasts.
