Hyundai Motor unions have asked the automaker to consider overseas expansion and focus on job security in Korea.

“Job security for our members should be guaranteed by reaffirming the role of domestic factories as the basis for production,” the union said in an 11-item list of demands.

The union added its activities should be left to itself and urged a more balanced split of profits. Other requests included higher wages and improved benefits.

Hyundai and sister company Kia already have a large production network in Europe, the US, India and China.

South Korean reports said unions suspected overseas expansion could cost jobs, although Hyundai said it needed to do business abroad to address rising Korean salaries and a crowded home market.

The union also wants to stress the importance of “co-existence” with management.
