Aiming to sell 40,000 Kyron SUVs annually at home and 30,000 abroad next year, Ssangyong told the Korea Herald the new car will appeal to the middle class who want the power of an SUV, the comfort of a sedan and the sophisticated design of a sports coupe.

Ssangyong reportedly said the Kyron was developed to reflect the Western European SUV trend as the carmaker eyes overseas markets from October.

Replacing the Musso SUV that has been sold for the past 13 years, the Kyron is Ssangyong’s card to revive the SUV boom, the paper said.

The Kyron LV7 four-wheel-drive is priced between 21.52 million won (manual transmission) and 27.99 million won (automatic). The Hyper 4WD is priced between 29.39 million and 31.66 million won.

According to autoindex.org, the name Kyron comes from Kai (infinite) and Run, meaning infinite freedom. The new model was developed under the code name D100 in 30 months and was previewed as the SV-R at the recent Seoul Motor Show.

Currently in Korea there’s just a 2.7-litre common-rail diesel engine available, which is esentially a Mercedes-Benz unit. The 2.7 litre CRDi is capable of 176 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. Later on a 2.0-litre petrol version will also be offered.

The Kyron sits on a modified Rexton platform, with a wheelbase of 2,740 mm. Road holding is enhanced by independent rear wheel suspension.

Standard features include 10 speaker entertainment system with DVD player, rear parking radar, Hill Descent Control and ESP.

The Kyron will make its European debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, while an American launch is also under consideration.
