South Korea’s Renault Samsung has agreed with the Seoul municipal authorities to supply a small fleet electric vehicles for use as local taxis, as part of a pilot project aimed at promoting the use of zero emissions vehicles for public transport.

The carmaker will provide 10 SM3 ZEs to a Seoul taxi company free of charge for an eight-month period starting this month while the city authorities will provide recharging facilities and waiver taxes and toll road fees.

The compact SM3 ZE went into production in 2013 and 398 units were sold last year, according to Renault Samsung. Sales in the first seven months of this year fell to 165 units, however.

Prices start at KRW19m (US$18,760), depending on local incentives.
