This includes exports of about 30,000 to 50,000 units. Last year, the automaker sold 115,425 cars at home and 3,610 cars overseas, up 40% on a year earlier.
To help with the expansion the company has embarked on a major recruitment drive. It currently has around 5,7000 employees and plans to hire an additional 1,000 for its Busan plant to begin two-shift production, and for its research centre in Kiheung, south east of Seoul.
Busan will manufacture the new sport utility vehicle that is due to be launched next year. The SUV will be the fourth model to be produced by Renault Samsung.
