Sales of imported cars in South Korea increased by 3.5% to 16,212 units in February, from 15,671 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA). 

Mercedes-Benz enjoyed a 46% sales rise to 5,534 units last month as the brand continued to benefit from Volkswagen-Audi's demise in this market. BMW sales were up by 9.8% at 3,202 units in the same month.

The Volkswagen-Audi emissions cover-up scandal, which resulted in some 80 models being banned from the market, continues to weigh heavily on the group.

Audi sales fell by over 63% year on year to 360 units while no new Volkswagen vehicles were sold compared with 2,196 units a year earlier.

Among the other smaller import brands in this market, Lexus sales almost doubled to 896 units, while Ford's sales fell by more than 5% to 709 units.
