December sales also rose 9.3% from November’s 1,762 units, the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association, or Kaida, reportedly said on Tuesday.

According to Dow Jones, the association said its members sold 19,461 imported vehicles in 2003, up 20.7% from the previous year’s 16,119 units.

Meanwhile, the report added, combined local sales of South Korea’s five car makers last year fell 19% year on year to 1.309 million units from 1.617 million units in 2002 due to weak demand.

Dow Jones said BMW, which exports 22 models to South Korea, kept its top position as the country’s most popular foreign carmaker, selling 471 units in December for 27.9% of South Korea’s imported car market.

Toyota’s Lexus ES330 sedan was the best-selling foreign car model in December, with 297 units sold, followed by the LS430 luxury saloon and RX330 SUV, the news agency added.
