Hyundai Motor told the Korea Times accumulated sales of the Sonata, first exported to the US in 1989, totalled 995,883 as of November and are expected to exceed 1m by the end of this year.
This would give Hyundai Motor three million-seller brands in the US after the Excel, which sold 1.14m before it was axed in 1996 and the Elantra, which sold 1.22m up to last month.
The model was launched in South Korea in 1985 and the first-generation Sonata – rear-drive back then – was part of efforts to expand its sales in North America after the success of the Excel. It was first introduced into Canada in 1987 and then the US in 1989, and has been built there for the past two years or so.
The model has achieved accumulated sales of 4.12m worldwide including 2.31m at home (where it is the top seller) over the past two decades.
