The automaker is idling the Alabama plant, which produces the Sonata, for 11 days between now and the end of the year.
“A number of economic factors beyond our control have resulted in decreased demand for automobiles, generally in the United States,” Hyundai’s US unit spokesman, Robert Burns, said in a statement.
Hyundai’s US sales in September fell 25.4 percent from a year earlier to 24,765 units.
Hyundai produces the Sonata sedan and the Santa Fe SUV at its Alabama plant.
