The Herald report says that with the government set to give its final ruling on the disputed issue, Hyundai Motor and affiliated Kia Motors, which are exporting large numbers of diesel-powered cars to Europe, are actively calling for their immediate approval in Korea.

But the newspaper points out that GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) is by comparison a diesel technology laggard and is said to be opposed to the introduction of diesel-engined passenger cars.

The report adds that the vehicle manufacturers’ association, KAMA, is struggling to formulate a united view among its member companies.

Diesel fuel is around 50% cheaper than petrol in Korea, but the government has said that a hike in diesel prices is prerequisite for the introduction of diesel-engined cars.
