South African component employers have presented a formal package of proposals to unions this afternoon (7 September) in a bid to end the strike which has crippled the industry for the past eight days.
The employers have offered the package through the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), with the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) and further labour organisations now retiring in a Johannesburg hotel to consider the deal.

Although details of the formal offer have not been revealed, the RMI is confident it will be accepted and end the strike, which has seen 70,000 auto component workers walk out in a pay and benefits protest.
“It is a whole package, not just one or two items,” RMI CEO Jeff Osborne told just-auto from Johannesburg. “I am optimistic – it is just a sense I have that we are close.
Some 50 union representatives and 20 employers are at the Johannesburg meeting. Further details are expected later today.
