Nissan South Africa is closing its local trim and seat manufacturing operation within the country, say SA news reports (18/10/00).
According to the report, Nissan South Africa says that closing the Rosslyn trim plant – at the end of 2000 – is key to the company’s revival plant to consolidate its global supplier base.

Johnson Controls SA – one of the biggest seat manufacturers in the world – is reported to be purchasing some of the plant’s assets, including trimming and cutting machines, alongside raw material inventory and work-in-progress, with the final price yet to be determined following a stock count at the end of 2000. The company will become seat supplier to Nissan in South Africa for all its current and future models as well as taking responsibility for designing seats for new models – with Johnson Controls holding the design rights to these seats.
The deal – yet to be approved by the Competitions Board – has been condemned by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), accusing Nissan South Africa of breaking work-time related agreements.
SA media report that Nissan South Africa is evaluating the positions of its staff.
