The first shipment of 1.3 litre Ford RoCam engines manufactured by the company’s improved South African production facility left for Europe last month. Ford’s Port Elizabeth plant had been designated as a supplier of the engines to the company’s assembly lines worldwide.

Designed by Ford in Cologne, Germany, the engine is said to have high power and torque, low operating costs, reliability and durability and run on a variety of fuels. The engine uses advanced technologies, including plastic intake manifolds, a fabricated camshaft and weight-reduction techniques.

Ford director of engine and component manufacturing, Charlie Shearer said: “We have proven that we can produce quality engines in South Africa. Our engine plant that is OS 9000, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, meets the most stringent international quality standards.”
