Acording to local website Fin24.com, around 800 of the company’s 4,000 employees have been offered voluntary retirement and redundancy projects.

Rella Bernardes, general manager for communication at Ford SA said all the job cuts would be voluntary.

Bernardes added that the move did not mean that production would fall, as export volumes are holding up, Instead its is a response to “current business requirements and the state of the South African economy” and a need to improve productivity.

General Motors South African has already cut around 1,000 jobs this year and Volkswagen’s operations in the country are facing difficulties because of strike by its logistics service provider, Schnellecke, which is now in its second week.
