PSA Peugeot Citroen plans to boost production temporarily at its Slovak plant in Trnava to meet high demand for the Peugeot 207 and Citroen C3 Picasso.

The factory has an installed capacity of 300,000 units a year and last year built just under 200,000 units, down from 205,000 in 2009 on two-shift working.

The company will add an extra hour to the second shift for three weeks from next week, spokesman Peter Svec told reporters.

Most of Trnava’s output is exported to Germany, France and Italy.

Trnava employs 3,000 and last month said that it planned to boost production and hire more workers “in the medium term”.

Slovakia’s auto industry, the driver for the former communist economy, saw something of a recovery from the global downturn over the course of 2010 with Kia, Volkswagen and PSA increasing production, according to Slovakia’s statistics office which said that production in October at the three plants was one third higher than the same month in 2009.
