The SXC, or Shanghai Cross Concept, is as its name suggests, the work of Peugeot’s design studio here in Shanghai.

The recently-opened Chinese styling centre joins Paris and Sao Paulo, Brazil, as one of Peugeot’s three global design bases.

Future models will incorporate ideas from all studios as Peugeot bids to strengthen its international presence. Part of that plan includes launching at least one new model a year in China where it has a target of selling 200,000 cars this year.

The 4.9m long SXC sits on 22-inch wheels and has reverse-hinged doors.

Power comes from PSA’s Hybrid4 technology with a 218bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine at the front driving the front wheels and a 95bhp electric motor at the rear driving the rear.

This technology permits all-wheel drive when the engine and electric motor are operating at the same time, benefiting safety and grip in extreme conditions. It also allows driving, at low speeds, in ‘zero emissions’ mode with the electric motor only.
