Chinese-owned SF Motors has agreed to spend US$160m on the former AM General Mishawaka Hummer plant in Indiana to build electric vehicles (EVs).
AM General agreed to sell the factory last year to the California-based electric vehicle developer, owned by Chongqing Sokon Industry Group, along with other facilities in China.

AM General had already decided to close the Mishawaka plant which previously made Hummer off road vehicles, before the sale to SF Motors was agreed.
SF Motors will retool the factory this year and is scheduled to begin production in 2019, employing, initially, 200 workers. The plant will serve as SF Motors' main North American production base with two newly developed EV models expected to be in production by 2020 – by which time the plant should be employing 470.
SF Motors is based in Silicon Valley near San Francisco and focuses on launching smart, battery-powered EVs worldwide. It now has factories in the US and China and R&D facilities in the US, Germany, China and Japan.
