Schaeffler says the explosion at its Bavaria rolling components plant which saw four people seriously injured on Monday (15 May), was not automotive-related.

Bavarian Police confirmed to just-auto no toxins were released as a result of the subsequent fire at the Eltmann plant employing 480 staff, although they initially closed the area around the factory as a precaution.

“On Monday, May 15, at around 10:15 am, an explosion occurred at our Eltmann plant in a temporary industrial salt purification facility operated by a service provider,” said Schaeffler in a statement sent to just-auto.

“Twenty-three persons were injured, seven of whom were taken directly to hospitals and specialist medical facilities. Please appreciate we are unable to make any information available about the current medical condition of those injured. Our thoughts are with those involved in the accident and their relatives.

“The employees and relatives affected are receiving comprehensive medical service and psychological support.  Schaeffler has passed the entire investigation on to the district attorney’s office. The investigations are complex and results can therefore not be expected soon.

“We do not foresee any implications for our customers and regular operation has restarted. The failure of one facility will be compensated completely by our nearby plant in Schweinfurt.”
