Volkswagen will pick a site for a car assembly plant in Russia in the next few days, a senior Russian Economy Ministry official told Reuters on Tuesday.

“Five or six regions are being considered by the concern, and it may announce its decision one of these days,” Yury Zhdanov, head of the Russian Federal Agency for Special Economic Zones told reporters.
Reuters noted that VW had earlier considered building a plant in Stupino outside Moscow, but Russia’s economy ministry declined to create a special economic zone with a favourable tax regime in the area.
In January, Volkswagen CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder said the firm had made a decision in principle to start assembling cars in Russia and construction could start this year. He also said its first model would be the Skoda Octavia, Reuters noted.
