Toyota is to add a second shift at its Russian plant near St Petersburg from September and has already hired 600 new personnel in preparation.

This will take the total workforce at the plant to 1,750. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Russia president Yoshinori Matsunaga described the addition of a second shift as a “significant event”.

Production of the redesigned Camry began at TMMR in November last year. Sales of the new model in Russia surged 66% year on year in the first quarter of this year, while sales of Toyota vehicles in the Russian market increased by 22% to 32,859 units during the same period.

TMMR has already announced plans to add stamping and resin-moulding processes to its production in St Petersburg during 2014.
