The company expects to produce 220,000 of these models each year.
Earlier, AvtoVAZ said it plans to halt production of the Lada 110 model in 2006, replacing it with the Priora, also known as the VAZ-2170. Production of the Kalina began last autumn.
Without elaborating, Vilchik said production of Lada’s rear-wheel drive cars, the 2105 and 2107, would continue at the company’s main assembly plant until there is insufficient demand and tougher safety requirements for cars are enforced.
In 2004, AvtoVAZ produced 717,981 cars, up 2.5% year on year, and plans to produce about 684,000 in 2005, Prime-Tass reported.
