Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in Russia fell 37% on the year to 74,086 units in January, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) told Prime-Tass.
Martin Jahn, the deputy chairman of the automobile manufacturers committee at the (AEB), attributed the slow period to traditionally low sales in January to the New Year holidays coupled with lower buying activity. The market could bounce as early as in February, he was quoted as saying.

Russia’s largest car manufacturer AvtoVAZ sold 17,308 Lada automobiles in January, down 41% on the year, while sales of automaker GAZ fell 12% to 2,925 units.
Among foreign-branded vehicles, sales of Hyundai went down 31% to 5,118 units in the period, sales of Kia increased 35% to 4,920 units, sales of Chevrolet decreased 51% on the year to 4,898 units in the period, sales of Renault increased 12% to 3,631 units, sales of Toyota decreased 54% to 3,340 units, and Ford’s sales fell 63% to 2,937 units.
In 2009, sales of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in Russia fell 49% on the year to 1.466 million units, Jahn said earlier.
