Car sales in Russia increased 12% year on year in the first half of 2006 to 910,000 units, Stanley Root, automotive industry analyst at PricewaterhouseCoopers, told Prime Tass on Thursday.

In monetary terms, sales grew 14% to $US12.1bn, Root said.
The number of imported new cars soared 61% to 318,000 units and new car imports in monetary terms were up 29% and were equivalent to $6.4bn in January-June.
The number of second-hand cars imported in H1 2006 was down 36% on the year to 103,000 units, the analyst said.
Domestic automotive producers’ output edged just 1% up to 386,000 cars worth $2.6bn, Root said.

By GlobalDataSales of foreign-branded cars assembled in Russia were up 53% ($1.6bn).
Some 102,000 domestically produced foreign cars were sold in Russia, 39% up.
Root told Prime-Tass he expected the country’s annual automobile production to grow by 31% to over 1.5m units by 2010. Of total car production, foreign-branded cars are expected to make up 39% of production in 2010, up from 13% currently.
