The move is expected to result in a 10% reduction in the price of the model, Opel’s press office said.

The plant also plans to launch production of a modified version of the popular Astra based on GM’s new unified platform for the compact class which underpins the Chevrolet Cruze launched in Russia in September.

The plant suspended production of the Antara and similar Chevrolet Captiva after the Cruze was launched, with GM saying it could resume production at any time depending on market demand.

The US$300m St Petersburg plant, opened late in 2008, is expected to reach its full projected capacity of 60,000 cars by the end of 2010.
