GM suspended production at its plant in St. Petersburg until 31 August while Ford halted output in Vsevolozhsk, in the Leningrad region until 9 July.

Both carmakers cited unfavourable market conditions, falling demand for cars, and a decline in Russian citizens’ purchasing power as reasons for the suspension.

Ford’s Russian plant also plans to suspend production from July 20 through August 9 in connection with corporate summer holidays, a plant spokesman earlier told Prime-Tass.

Meanwhile, the country’s largest truck manufacturer Kamaz has partially resumed production following a one-week suspension, Oleg Afanasyev, director of the company’s department for information policy, told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

Kamaz has resumed production of iron, steel, and non-ferrous castings, Afanasyev said, adding that the company planned to resume some operations at its machining facilities by the end of the week.

Afanasyev reiterated that Kamaz expected to re-launch operations of its main production line on 6 July.

On 23 June, Kamaz suspended its main production line after fulfilling its orders for the month. Its has stopped production several times in the past six months due to a decline in demand.
