Prime-TASS News reports that from July, the GAZ autoworks (Nizhni Novgorod) will begin equipping its Volga sedans (you know, the Soviet-era designs often seen on official business in Moscow – Putin took Bush for a spin in one recently) with Chrysler 2.4- litre 150hp engines.

Volgas with Chrysler engines will be $500 pricier than their counterparts provided with domestically-made engines. Before the year-end, GAZ will make the first 3,000 such cars. In 2006, the automaker will make further upgrades on the Volga (GAZ-3110) model, improving its passenger compartment, axles, optics and, possibly, bumpers.

GAZ’ press secretary Sergei Lugovoi said that the company had equipped Volgas with Toyota, Ford and Rover engines in the past, so it has experience equipping its cars with imported engines.

Currently, the main supplier of engines to GAZ is Russia’s Zavolzhsky Engine Plant (ZMZ).

GAZ is part of Russia’s major RusPromAvto automobile holding.
