Russia’s major vehicle maker GAZ has partially stopped vehicle production from Friday until December 5, the company told the Prime-Tass news agency.

Alexei Barantsev, the general director of GAZ’s plant, ordered the halt in production on Monday. The company’s press service said the step was taken so that the plant could “optimise technological processes” and prepare equipment for production in 2005.
The company’s production of GAZel and Sobol vans, trucks and minibuses has been stopped for a period of six days, while truck production has been stopped for three days, the company said.
Sergei Lugovoi, the head of the company’s press service, said earlier the shutting down of vehicle production would not affect the company’s output plan for November and December.
In January-November 2004, GAZ’s output increased 0.8% year on year to 184,192 vehicles, with 51,410 cars, down 18.8%, and 132,782 vans, up 11.2%, including 30,727 minibuses, up 5.8%.
In 2003, GAZ’s exports amounted to about 36,000 vehicles and assembly kits.
GAZ is part of Russia’s major RusPromAvto automobile holding, Prime-Tass said.
